Summer days are here again and that means the grilling season is in full force. Downtown is packed with great local places to grab some of the best burgers around. As a bonus, it’s also a way to help support small businesses. Here are the top five best burger places, as voted on by locals, to try the next time you get a craving.
Top Choice Overall
747 S Scales St
Capturing the top spot is Pete’s Burgers. Pete’s was rated as the best place for burgers in Reidsville by an overwhelming number of locals on a recent Facebook post. This family-owned burger joint not only has charm but also a fixings bar that many Southerners crave. For recommendations, the locals agree the double cheeseburger or Super Burger is the way to go. Hitting the fixings bar is highly encouraged by many so as the saying goes, “Do what the locals do”! If you are really up for a challenge, the 13-patty burger pictured below is an option.
Tied for 2nd are Bacon Brothers and Short Sugar’s:
306 N Scales St
In for a little Southern charm? Then the Bacon Brothers will fit that bill quite nicely! While this establishment is mainly known for serving breakfast and country classics all day, this place also happens to provide burgers that, despite their simplicity, do not fail to hit the right spot. Their double bacon burger is top-notch and is packed to the hilt with beef and bacon. Add a side of their unbelievably tasty pancakes, and you have one heck of a good meal!
1328 S Scales St
Short Sugar’s is a historic 1949 barbecue joint with a flavorful past. This little time capsule offers not only a humbling story of passion and goodwill but also an authentic array of classic barbecued meats and sandwiches at an affordable price. If you decide to visit them, try the recommended Teenager Burger that’s sure to take you back! This double-stacked cheeseburger was mentioned more than once in our survey along with their chili dog. This burger is packed with toppings to the point that they have to make it upside down to keep everything on the bun. Short Sugar’s is listed on the NC Barbecue Trail.
Reidsville locals are both loyal and very hungry as they can’t seem to pick just one as their favorite. The conversation on social media went back and forth so we have another tie for 3rd between Foster’s Grill and Reid House.
929 W Harrison St
Foster’s Grill is another must try local favorite. Freshly made every day, their patties are a perfect solution for a quick fix. And if you’re in the mood for more homestyle food, then have no fear as this restaurant has you covered. From comforting classics such as pork chops and mac and cheese to salty surprises such as their seafood specialties, you're sure to find something that will tickle your tastebuds!
1220 S Scales St
Another local charmer that has gotten some buzz is Reid’s House. This diner focuses on serving up homestyle southern dishes to its customers and is known for its good-to-the-last-bite pies too. While not their main specialty, their burgers, primarily their Master Burger, are still highly rated among the locals. Topped with a generous helping of chili and cole slaw, these messy burger toppings are how Southerners prefer it.
In Fourth Place is...
234 SW Market St
A little luck goes a long way and The Celtic Fringe is in no short supply. Known for its selection of comforting Irish dishes, this traditional pub offers a splash of nuance – and whiskey – to the Reidsville area. Don’t miss out on their only burger, the Celtic Smash. Caramelized patties with a mouth-watering sear that pairs nicely with their Irish cheese fries. Knock back a glass of Guinness or select one of their many wines and savor the warm and inviting atmosphere.
Rounding out our list are two places you wouldn’t think about getting a burger, but locals give them a big thumbs up!
200 Turner Drive
Burgers are traditionally seen as an American cuisine so one may be skeptical to try out an Italian restaurant for a cheeseburger. When it comes to Carmelas Pizza, however, one should reconsider. While they are normally known for serving up cheesy pizzas and tasty subs, this Italian parlor can whip up a satisfactory cheeseburger that gets people thinking twice about ever judging an eatery by its name alone. They also have amazing subs like the chicken philly pictured below, packed with loads of meat and toppings.
1401 Freeway Dr
Burgers are nice, but so is Mexican food. Why not have both? At Monterrey Mexican, you can! Whether you want some of their famous tacos and fajitas or a bite of their praised burgers, you can be sure that you’ll be served fresh food at a reasonable price. On top of that, you can pair your food with one of their signature margaritas that has become a certified classic.
